Here is my experience at the 2011 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. 18000ft of climbing, 21000 ft of decent, all trails, 100 miles through the mountains of California in temperatures ranging from 40F to 95F. My race didn’t go so great, but I finished what I started. A month later I won the Vermont 100 in 15 hours and 26 minutes when I was having a better day. Running 100 miles through the mountains is a serious adventure every time. Lots of up’s and down’s in 100 mile races, and it builds serious character.
